How do digestive enzymes work in the stomach?
Digestive enzymes are needed by everyone to help the digesti...The stomach has two distinct divisions: Fundus (upper part) and Pylorus (lower part). The eaten food remains in the upper part for approximately one hour. This is where predigestion takes place. The fundus is where digestive food enzymes begin to break down the food into carbohydrates, fats and protein. Raw foods supply their own digestive enzymes, thus saving the stomach from supplying all the enzymes.

Will enzymes digest my mouth, stomach, or intestines?
Enzymes FAQ'sIf this were true, the enzymes produced by your own body would have already digested you away. These enzymes much prefer the denatured (cooked or damaged) proteins found in foods. Most proteins, in their healthy state, are coiled and globular in structure. This prevents the enzymes from having access to cleavage sites. When heated or in extremes of pH (like stomach acid), the proteins uncoil, exposing sites where the enzyme can bind and cleave. See similar questions...
What is gastric acidity and why is it measured?
Highlights and FAQ'sGastric acidity is the term used to refer to the acid content of the stomach. Most of this acidity is due to the presence of hydrocholoric acid secreted by the mucosa (lining) of the stomach. The clinical laboratory can make two kinds of determinations involving gastric acidity: the concentration of acid in the stomach contents and the rate of acid output by the mucosa. Sorensen developed a scale to use in measuring the H+ concentration. See similar questions...

digestive enzymes: food enzyme supplements support nutrition...When speaking about digestive enzyme formulas, no. As active protein molecules, the enzymes do not accumulate in the body. They impart enzymatic activity that lasts anywhere from one to four hours and then they are eliminated from the body or the proteins are broken down and the amino acids are used for other purposes. As with any herbal or nutritional supplement, evaluation of amounts and over consumption should be determined on an individual basis. [back to top] See similar questions...
