The Gnome and KDE desktop environments can get into such a state that they either won't start or start more-or-less uselessly. Or you may just have configured a miserable combination of fonts, colours and desktop images and want to start afresh. Make sure that you have added a notification area / tray to your taskbar. In GNOME 2.6, right-click on the task bar and do "Add to the panel > Tools > Notification Area" (in German: ,,Zum Panel hinzuf??gen > Werkzeuge > Benachrichtigungsfeld").
