I have been told that my uterus in enlarged and that I have fibroids. What does this mean?

FAQ
The uterus is mostly made of muscle. When tumors in this muscle develop we call them fibroids. Only rarely are they cancerous. These muscle tumors can distort to uterus and enlarge it sometimes leading to abnormal bleeding. They can also cause pressure symptoms and problems by pressing on adjacent structures in the pelvis. These can lead to bladder, kidney, bowel problems, pain, etc. The management of the fibroids depends upon their size and the symptoms they are causing.

After an ultrasound I've been told that my uterus is atrophic. What does that mean?

IPOF Association: Dr. Nanette Santoro's POF FAQ: POF Diagnos...
Atrophy is a very powerful word, and when an ultrasound shows a small uterus, it's often called 'atrophic'. This brings up images of a little old lady's uterus in the body of a young woman, and it makes people upset. The uterus is incredibly responsive to hormonal stimulation. The tiny uterus seen in a preadolescent girl or a postmenopausal woman would grow in days to weeks if the person was given a little estrogen. See similar questions...

Is UFE effective for multiple fibroids? Does it matter where the fibroids are located in the uterus?

Uterine Fibroid Embolization: Frequently Asked Questions
UFE is a global treatment of the entire uterus treating all fibroids simultaneously regardless of size, number, or location. Pedunculated fibroids may be the exception. They occur on a stalk and may project from the outer surface of the uterus. While they may respond to UFE many IRs believe they are best treated by other means, such as laparoscopic removal, due to concerns about a higher complication rate following UFE. Frequently Asked Questions

A smear showing slight changes does NOT mean you have cancer. It simply means that your smear picked up some cells from your cervix that looked slightly abnormal. A smear that shows slight changes is sometimes referred to as an “abnormal smear” or “pre-cancerous changes”. Slight changes are sometimes also referred to as Borderline, or Mild. I was told that my ABI test was inconclusive because I have diabetes. What does that mean?

Frequently Asked Questions | PAD | Vascular Disease Foundati...
ABI stands for ankle brachial index and compares the blood pressure measured at the ankle to the pressure measured at the brachial artery, which is located in the arm. Diabetes can cause the artery wall to become calcified or hard and the blood pressure cuff cannot compress the artery to get an accurate pressure. As an illustration, think of water flowing through a garden hose and a pipe in your home - you can bend the hose but not the pipe. See similar questions...

I have been told my "homocysteine levels" are high. What does this mean?

Frequently Asked Questions | PAD | Vascular Disease Foundati...
Homocysteine is an amino acid. It is normally found in the body and is used to make protein. It is thought that too much homocysteine contributes to plaque build up and blood clot formation. High levels of homocysteine have been linked to increased risk for PAD and for damage to blood vessels in the heart and brain. Taking folic acid may reduce homocysteine levels, but it is not known whether folic acid prevents vascular diseases. Clinical trials are currently underway. See similar questions...

I was told this lump was benign. What does that mean?

Fine Needle Aspiration FAQ
That means we have not detected any cancer in the lump. Although FNA is a useful diagnostic procedure, like other medical tests, it is not perfect. Because such a small sample is taken from a lump (which is the reason FNAs are relatively painless), it is possible that the cells we collect do not represent the entire lump. Studies have shown that the chances of failing to find a cancer when one is present are between one-in-a-hundred and one-in-twenty. See similar questions...
