A hamster can run for a distance of several kilometres or more in a night. So that is a lot of exercise. It is best to find a large solid plastic exercise wheel. Hamsters love to come out of their cage and run around a room in the late evening or early morning. If the cage has an easy access side opening then you can leave it open on the floor. The hamster will learn to come out and run around and then climb back into the cage on his own whenever he needs a rest.

To prevent weight gain, the National Women's Health Center suggests 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity on most days of the week, while watching caloric intake. To keep weight off they suggest 60 to 90 minutes daily of vigorous activity.

Baxter gets about an 1 hour to 1.5 hour of exercise a day. I work from home so my "coffee breaks" have now become "frisbee breaks" and I try and take him on a 3 mile walk in the woods 4-5 times a week with smaller walks in between. I exercise for 30 minutes daily. After treatment your exercise regime will be tailored for you. I've read that the average life span of a hamster is about 1000 days, which would be about 2 years and 9 months. The longest living hamster I had was about 2 years and 8 months old, which I figured out to be 965 days, pretty close to 1000! I know of other people who have had a hamster that lived 3 or 4 years.

Hamsters are crepuscular, which means they like to sleep during the day and party all night long. If you don't believe me try putting your hamster's cage in your bedroom one night and see how much sleep you get. This doesn't mean you'll never see them. If you give your hamsters a treat when you get home they'll come to expect it and be waiting for you!

In warm conditions or when he is asleep, a male hamster will let his balls drop out. These can look very big and sometimes alarm a hamster owner. He will pull them back when he is active, or if you lightly touch one. As a hamster becomes old, he is less active and you are more likely to see this.
