ESL classes are classes which teach English language skills to people whose native language is not English.

This really depends on your language proficiency and your reason for studying in the Gulf Islands International Program. Most international students will be assessed as part of the orientation process to determine the level of ESL that they will need in order to pursue their academic goals. We offer four levels of ESL support, including Introductory ESL, Advanced ESL, Composition 11 and Advanced Writing/Composition 12. Advanced Writing/Composition 12 is the prerequisite to English 10.

The Utah State Office of Education grants the teacher endorsement for English as a Second Language (ESL). Having this endorsement attached to your teaching license strengthens your preparation and may enhance job opportunities. Undergraduates may begin the necessary courses (16 credit hours) at any time. American TESOL Institute currently provides volunteer, internship, or online ESL positions inside the USA. Each state in the Union has different requirement regarding teaching ESL inside the public school system. Other qualifications such as Bachelors or Masters degrees, and specific requirements for teaching in a particular state, will be the final determining factor for employment inside the USA.

Helpful hints in the classroom, cultural awareness about living abroad and any other ideas that would prove useful and relevant to the global ESL Community. Of course, because we ourselves don't really make much money operating this site, these writing positions are strictly on a voluntary basis.

The main differences between ESL (English as a Second Language) and EFL (English as a Foreign Language) are the place in which English is taught and the purpose for which the students use English. ESL is taught in a place where English is the most commonly spoken language. Speakers need to know functional language and vocabulary specific to the place where they live. EFL is English taught in a country where a language other than English is primarily spoken.

You are only required to take English as a Second Language if English is not the first language you learned as a child, and/or you do not speak English with family members, friends or co-workers, and/or you did not complete most of your education in English. We strongly encourage you take the ESL test if the above situation applies to you. The ESL test has been specifically designed to assess the English skills of non-native English speakers.
