Most notebooks have power saving features designed to conserve battery charge. Some of these features include screen, memory, and hard drive suspend modes. Depending on the power savings features of your notebook, the computer will power down to conserve power. When the battery charge drops to a certain level, the system will force one of these suspend modes. Check your hardware and software documentation for specific details on the power savings features of your computer.

Yes, it is very important to condition or fully discharge and then fully charge the battery every two to three weeks. Failure to do so may significantly shorten the battery's life (this does not apply to Li-Ion batteries, which do not require conditioning).
