DOES A PERSON NEED A ROAD BIKE, OR DO SOME RIDERS USE MOUNTAIN AND/OR HYBRID BIKES?

BRAG - Frequenty Asked Questions (FAQ) :::
We see more and more hybrids every year. My personal opinion is that BRAG is easier if you use a road bike with skinny tires because it has less road resistance. There will always be someone riding at or near your pace. See similar questions...

Do I need suspension?

faqs
A cushy ride can be wonderful and may spoil you. It works even better with small wheels (20-inch drive wheel). However, it can complicate the bike: fender and rack mounting, added weight, more moving parts (shocks, swing arms, pivot bolts) and suspension parts need to be serviced at regular intervals. On smaller wheeled models, achieving acceptable gearing (with a small drive wheel) is also a consideration. CLWB's and LWB's can best utilize rear suspension. See similar questions...

Answer: Familiarize yourself with the Performance Advantages and the answer will become more evident. Suspension has substantial benefits on both rough and "smooth" terrain; otherwise other performance wheeled vehicles (cars, motorcycles...) wouldn't use it. Answer 1: Softride has cut a lot of weight off their bikes in the past few years. A Classic R1 with Ultegra weighs 19.5lbs and Rockets are almost a pound less. See similar questions...
