The iPod supports MP3 WAV and AAC file formats. In addition the iTunes software supports and convert Red Book Audio (CD Standard) and WMA file formats into either MP3 or AAC formats. AAC is the audio component of MPEG 4, and so AAC files are smaller and are better quality than MP3 files, and therefore are the recommended format.
