All butterfly orders come with easy to follow butterfly care and release instructions. Releasing butterflies is easy - although we do recommend in all the excitement of a special occasion that a designated person ('a butterfly attendant') be given the responsibility of taking care of your butterflies and for ensuring that these instructions are followed.

The Butterflies will go out in search of nectar plants on which the will feed. Monarch Butterflies are migratory and have the ability to travel thousands of miles. They will search out Milkweed, which is their host plant, and go about their business of reproduction. Monarch Butterflies that are released in the fall will migrate to various over-wintering sites, and possibly return in the spring.

Releases should be scheduled during the daytime when the sun is out, or during overcast weather, but not when it is raining. Live butterflies should be released, at the latest, an hour or two before the sun sets to allow them time to acquire nectar and find a place to roost for the evening. The best temperature for the release of live Monarch butterflies is 62°F or higher, and for Painted Lady butterflies 72° F is required for them to take flight.

Once they reach the butterfly stage, most live an average of about 10 days. There are exceptions in the Conservatory. The Longwing butterflies can live 3 or more months.

If you intend them as an attractive garden decoration, they work superbly. If you'd like to provide shelter to butterflies, these two articles say they most likely will not use them. However, several of our visitors have been successful.

The helium release valve works by letting helium out of your watch, and nothing else in. This only comes in handy when you are in a helium-saturated environment such as a dive bell. You can open it on land, but make sure you screw it back down before you submerge it in water. Leaving it open while the watch is under water can let water into the watch. For inflatable, the safety release system makes one line (either one of the front line or back line for a 4 line inflatable) about 1 kite span longer than the other lines (applicable to both 2 line or 4 line inflatable) to disable the kite when you stop holding the control bar. For foil, the safety release system pull on the brake lines to collapse the kite and have it gently landing backward.

Their are two main ways to get good butterfly release photography. The first, and most common, is for the photographer to be ready before the butterflies are released and often you can get an even better effect if all of your guests that release the butterflies are standing close together. The second method for getting great live butterfly photos is to save a few live butterfly envelopes just for the photographer to hand to your guests one at a time to release directly in front of the camera.

All rehabilitated animals are released in clean and oil free areas chosen by federal and state trustee agency personnel and IBRRC. If the area that they were captured in is still oiled then the animals are sometimes transported to more remote locations for release.

There are no hard and fast rules. Every individual is different and responds to the exercises differently. We know of (rare) cases of almost immediate awakening.
