The choice of JPEG format over GIF for the larger images was made for two different reasons. The first is a matter of size. In most cases, the JPEG images are smaller. GIF's advantages is that it is supported by practically all web browsers, can include transparent backgrounds, supports interlacing (providing a low-resolution preview of the graphic to the viewer while it downloads), and can be used as an image map (allowing the viewer to click on the graphic as they would a regular link to another site.) GIF's disadvantages are that it can only support 8-bit color (or a palette no greater than 256 colors).

Gifs are usually only best for images where there are large flat areas of a single colour, such as a diagram. Gifs can have transparent areas in them, and can be animated, which a jpeg can't. Gifs are also limited to 256 colours. Jpegs are preferrable to gifs for almost any image that isn't a diagram. Jpegs compress the data very well, meaning that your picture files will be smaller. This compression creates inaccuracies though, but these inaccuracies are not usually noticeable.

The two most likely problems are related to image type and layers. For instance, your image type must be "Indexed" for GIF, but "RGB" for TIFF. Try a different image type (look under the "Image" menu). If you have more than 1 layer in your image, you probably need to merge the visible layers, and/or "flatten" the image. Both operations are available under the "Layers" menu or from the "Layers" dialog. Flattening will destroy any background transparency.

These are compressed image files that do not typically print to our image setter. We would need to review the file to determine if it is useable. To ensure that the file will work it should be saved as an uncompressed file, which is a TIFF or EPS.

Just select "File|Convert Picture to Icon". Then select your image source file and determine the part of the image you want to transform into an icon. After that you will be able to edit your new icon and of course export it as an icon file (.ico).
