We do not provide a linux implementation. But Kevin Hester has written Java communications API drivers for linux and uses our CommPort driver loading scheme to load his own gnu.io.RXTXCommDriver class. He gave us permission to disclose his web page: Sun will not be releasing the source code to reference implementations. Yes in signed applets, but no in unsigned applets (most cases). Since we do not allow unsigned applets access to any communications port under the JDK1.1 security model, you can not use the Java communications API with unsigned applets. Just look in the 'libjava' directory of libgcj and see what classes are there. Most GUI stuff isn't there yet, that's true, but many of the other classes are easy to add if they don't yet exist. HP's OODCE (DCE C++ class library) provides you with a default, built-in ACL Manager with the server class. To use authenticated DCE services, you must have credentials from the DCE security service; vanilla Kerberos v5 tickets aren't sufficient. But then, to use DCE services you must be using DCE RPC, so this is not really a problem. Going the other way, it is expected that a DCE security server can issue tickets that can be used by vanilla Kerberos applications.
