Check to see if the phone line is connected correctly to your system. Make sure it is connected to the LINE jack of the modem. Go into the Device Manager and remove all items listed under "Modems". To remove an item in Windows XP and Windows 2000, select the item, click the Action menu, choose Uninstall. To remove an item in Windows 98 and Windows ME, select the item and click Remove. If the installation asks you for the drivers point the installation to drivers.

Even though the standard is 56K and the modem is capable of 56K, don't expect it. First of all, the FCC regulates it to a maximum of 53K and the phone switching equipment that Verizon and most phone companies use will not pass data above around 50K. Previously, we suggested that people use Mac modem cables; however, it has come to our attention that there is no one standard Mac modem cable. Since correct modem operation on a NeXT depends upon a correctly wired modem cable, buying a Mac cable is not a good idea. This error is caused by a setting in your FTP client, that limits the amount of time your FTP client will wait for a server to respond. In order to fix this problem, increase the "server timeout" setting; a setting of 180 seconds should be enough time to connect to the archive.org servers. Regional Bell Operating Companies are sometimes tariffed and will only allow (with perfect telephone line conditions) 53K. Tariffs are established by the FCC and by state Public Utility Commissions. Because analog lines are a little noisy (static), your modem will automatically slow down to accommodate for noise. It is normal for 56K modems to connect between 39 - 51K. This is a common question because many things can cause this. First off, it is important to remember that while 56K is the theoretical limit a modem can connect on a normal analog phone line, NO modem ever connects at 56K. About the best a modem could ever achieve is 53K and a modem that connects at 40K or better in most cases is doing pretty well. First, the highest connection the FCC allows over standard phone lines is 53.3k. This is the fastest connect rate you can get. If your are connecting in the 40k-50k range, this is considered good for most dial up connections.
