Usually the default memory configuration of your VM should be sufficient to work with SQL Developer. If you want to increase the available memoy anyway you will have to start the application with additional command line options. If you use a Sun Microsystem Java VM open a shell window, change to the SQL Developer folder and type java -Xmx256m -jar sqldeveloper.jar to start with a maximum heap memory of 256 MB. The default maximum heap size is 64 MB.

If you get an out-of-memory error (or would like to increase the amount of memory that the server can use), add the "-mx128m" argument when running java/jre. In fact, we recommend increasing the amount of memory available to Java to allow Java and the server to use up to 128 megabytes of virtual memory, if necessary. No. RAM and virtual memory are not the same. Virtual memory allows you to use a portion of your hard drive as though it were RAM. Because your hard drive is up to 100 times slower than your RAM, virtual memory is much slower than RAM. When you upgrade your RAM, you may discover that you use your virtual memory less because you will now have more memory available to complete the tasks that were previously handled by your virtual memory.

If PS1.3 cannot be started or if some sounds are cut and clicking, there's not enough "conventional memory" free. Please note that the so-called "conventional memory" has nothing to do with the total RAM available on the computer. You will sometimes see an error message something like this: Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 67108864 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate xx bytes) in /var/www/moodle/yyyy.php This error means that the php memory_limit value is not enough for the php script. The memory_limit value is the "allowed memory size" - 64M in the example above (67108864 bytes / 1024 = 65536 KB. 65536 KB / 1024 = 64 MB).
