For the vast majority of people singing is a healthy pursuit and one that is positively good for both body and mind; but if you have a health problem that you think might be affected adversely by energetic singing, do look after yourself and consult your doctor before starting these exercises.

Since the primary action of the exercises is to tone the pharyngeal muscles, it will be clear that the programme is aimed at snorers who are snoring precisely because, or at least mainly because, their pharyngeal muscles are lax! Shape notes are are like ordinary Western musical notation, except that the note-heads are printed in distinctive geometrical shapes to indicate their position and musical syllable. Guido of Arezzo, an eleventh-century monk, devised the hexachord system of six syllables (ut re mi_fa sol la) with specific intervals between each adjacent pair of syllables. In sixteenth-century England, singers discovered they could get by with only four syllables (mi_fa sol la).

The Singing for Snorers exercises are specifically designed for snorers to target and tone the areas of the throat where the snoring vibration can take place. They focus on the muscles that control the soft palate, the palatopharyngeal arch (See diagram), the movement of the tongue (especially forwards and back) and the naso-pharynx, which is the region of the pharynx up behind the soft palate which leads to the nose.

Ela is singing in the 'forgotten language of God'. Some people refer to her singing as Icaros (songs given by spirit). Linguists would call this glossolalia (a form of sound language usually spoken by people in trance), Christians call it speaking in tongues. A singing school is a very useful Sacred Harp tradition, in which new singers are introduced to the rudiments of Sacred Harp singing. Many singing schools are conducted across the nation. They usually only last a day or two, so most people can find the time to attend these lessons.

A singing telegram is more than just a person showing up and singing a song. It's a professional actor doing a ten to fifteen minute comedy skit as the character of your choice. We present the recipient with a party hat, a party horn, a pink souvenir telegram, sing a comedy song for the occasion, and work personal information into the verbal part of the show. They won't ever forget it!
