If you want to play all QuickTime files: install Apple QuickTime, install IrfanView PlugIns. Activate the Quicktime PlugIn for IrfanView in Properties->Video/Sound.

The most likely explanation is that you have rendered the movie at a higher resolution than your computer can play back with the QuickTime compressor (codec) with which the movie was rendered. Keep in mind that full-motion video at broadcast resolution can not be played back by most computers unless it was rendered with a QuickTime compressor designed for computer play back. The best things about irfanview are that it is cheap and that it is fast. It's not a great image editing program. I have it set to be my default jpeg application because it starts up very quickly and lets me move through a directory very quickly. When in full screen mode, you can hit the space bar to move forward. You can also use the left and right mouse buttons to move back and forwards (or page-up and page-down). The MPEG-2 Playback Component can play back MPEG-2 files on non-encrypted DVDs. Professionally produced, commercial DVDs (such as Hollywood movies) are usually encrypted with special anti-piracy software, called Content Scramble System (CSS). In order to view these DVDs, decryption software is required and is included in DVD players. But decryption software is not included in QuickTime or the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component. Well, simply put, you don't. ffdshow doesn't decode those formats (at least not reliably), and there are no plans on adding the standalone decoders to the pack in the foreseeable future. In the Windows Live Photo Gallery, QuickTime videos are displayed if you have QuickTime installed.
