The standard text fonts supplied with Acrobat Reader have mostly glyphs for characters from the ISO Latin 1 character set. For a variety of reasons, even those are not completely guaranteed to work, for example you can't use the fi ligature from the standard serif font. Check the overview for the default PDF fonts. If you use your own fonts, the font must have a glyph for the desired character.

There is currently no way to embed fonts other than the base fonts supported by HTMLDOC. Not easily. Full versions of Acrobat have a text selection tool (big T) that allows export of text. In exporting tables, the columns are separated only by spaces, and you can't discriminiate these breaks from the spaces between hundreds and thousands without looking back at the pdf. Thus, columnar data exported this way requires tedious cleanup and parsing before data can be used in a spreadsheet.

HTMLDOC 1.8.20 and higher support embedding of the base Type 1 fonts: Courier, Helvetica, Symbol, and Times. HTMLDOC does not currently allow embedding of arbitrary fonts specified by the HTML FONT element. Each embedded font adds approximately 84k of data to PostScript files and 43k of data to PDF files. The full set of Type 1 fonts adds 1094k to PostScript files and 555k to PDF files.

When Acrobat Distiller from the full Acrobat program installs, it activates links inside some other programs that permits direct creation of PDFs from the application. However easy these links may be, they do not always give you control over the full set of configuration options that using Distiller as a printer driver does.

Yes, these can cause printing problems in some cases (such as when printing to an early Harlequin RIP or some HP LaserJet printers). Fortunately, exporting a PDF file to PostScript can convert TrueType fonts to PostScript format. When you redistill the file to PDF format, the fonts will be in PostScript format. While most of the time this round-trip from PDF to PostScript and then back to PDF works fine, occasionally a font may change its encoding and no longer display correctly.

We follow Adobe guidelines on font embedding. In particular, only those embedded fonts can be saved to a local file, which explicitly set "installable embedding" bit in fsType flag. All other fonts can only be opened in the read-only mode that forbids saving the font and copying any information from it.

Rotating pages and cropping pages only affects the display of the PDF file. If you export the PDF file to PostScript, pages will revert to their original uncropped and unrotated state.

This simply means that all of the font information used to make your document look the way it does is stored in the PDF file. So no matter what fonts someone else has on their computer, they'll be able to see the file as you intended it to be seen. If you don't embed fonts, Acrobat will make it's best guess at font substitution using whatever fonts are available on the reader's computer.
