Where should I locate my radiators?

FAQs & Helpful Information Content
For even heating and the right comfort levels, most radiators are best placed in the coldest part of the room: under the window. This is because the cold outside air helps create the right convection inside i.e. pushing the hot air from the radiator into the room. Large spaces are more effectively heated with 2 or more smaller radiators rather than one large one. A rule of the thumb often used in the trade is to have one radiator every four metres (about 15 feet) or so in the room.

What should I paint my radiators with?

FAQs & Helpful Information Content
The radiators supplied with painted finishes have a very durable baked-on powder coated finish that will not fade. They therefore do not need painting. For our cast iron radiators supplied in a primer coating they will need to be finished with an acrylic water based enamel. This is the best solution, as it will stop any rust from appearing or the paint colour to fade. See similar questions...

How and why do radiators freeze?

How should I position my radiators?

PURMO | People | Service and support | FAQ
The best place for any radiator is in the coldest part of the room, which is usually under a window. Also, using several small radiators in a large room, rather than one bulky radiator, will ensure better heat distribution. The physical size of a radiator is also important, as it can affect the balance of a room. There is nothing worse than having a small but high output radiator placed against a large blank wall. Can I fit decorative covers over my radiators?

FAQs & Helpful Information Content
Decorative covers can be utilised, however they will significantly reduce the output of a radiator. The amount of heat reduction is dependent on the actual design of the cabinet so we cannot give an exact heat reduction figure. Thermostatic radiator valves should not be fitted inside covers. See similar questions...

Why are my radiators hot at the top and cold at the bottom?

FAQs & Helpful Information Content
This indicates that the radiator may be receiving an insufficient flow of water, typically large radiators need a higher water flow than small radiators. There may be several reasons for this, such as incorrect balancing, incorrect pipe size or an under-performing or under-sized pump, there may also simply be a blockage in the radiator. A heating engineer should be called to carry out further investigations. See similar questions...

Do my radiators need venting?

FAQs & Helpful Information Content
If your radiators are cold at the top and hot at the bottom, the radiator needs venting (bleeding). Simply turn off the heating system and slightly open the air vent (some radiators will require a radiator vent key, others may need a small screwdriver) until water is noted at the air vent. Take care to protect decorated surfaces with a cloth prior to opening the air vent. Gently close the vent and switch the system back on. See similar questions...

Why are there cold spots in my radiators?

PURMO | People | Service and support | FAQ
the conveying height of the circulation pump is too low or the pump is running at too low a power setting, which causes the flow-rate in certain circuits to be too small. the thermostat control is covered by an item of furniture, or curtains. This causes the temperature at the thermostat to be significantly higher than in the room itself, which in turn causes the valve to be completely or partially closed and the flow-rate to decrease. See similar questions...

Why can I hear sounds in my radiators?

PURMO | People | Service and support | FAQ
a hissing sound indicates that the flow-rate is too high through the valve, caused by the pressure being too high. a tick-tick-tick sound indicates there is tension in the system in the pipes, the radiator, and the wall units. This is common in winter when temperatures outside drop to freezing. A radiator that is not protected against frost inside can freeze. This doesn't only happen in houses still being built, it can also happen in houses that are already inhabited. See similar questions...

How can frozen radiators be avoided?

PURMO | People | Service and support | FAQ
Always fit radiators with thermostat valves. This will guarantee that a supply of warm central heating water remains available. You must, however, always ensure that you do not fully shut the thermostat valve, but turn it to the star. Do not set the night temperature too low. Most people have a room thermostat in the living room. If this is set to 15°C at night and this temperature is maintained in the room, the thermostat will send a message to the boiler to stop heating for the time being. See similar questions...

FAQs & Helpful Information Content
Yes, however, because there is a lot of mass with cast iron, the radiators have the advantage of staying warm long after the central heating has been turned off. This means that the changes in temperature in a room heated with radiators made of cast iron are more gentle than those in a room heated with regular radiators. See similar questions...

FAQ's
We use Buderus radiators. They are high quality, wall-mounted, efficient, German-made radiators with individual Danish-made controls.
