Oil-based and acrylic paints cannot be mixed. Acrylic paints are water-based. There is a new type of paint out now, called alkyd paint. Although it is water-based, alkyd paint can be used with oil paints. You can never paint in acrylic over a painting previously done in oil paint. You can, however, paint with oil paint over an acrylic painting.

Do not mix any craft paints with professional grade paints. They not only weaken the pigments but also dramatically reduce the quality and light-fastness. It depends on how you are using the acrylics. If you are using them as you would watercolor techniques of thin washes, there is no special preparation except that you may want to use a block instead of sheets. If you are using the acrylics as an opaque medium, I recommend you use 112 rough watercolor board or a heavy-duty illustration board.

It is a water-based paint. Therefore soluble in water, so you can clean brushes in water and there is no odour. It is a thinner paint than household emulsions and can be applied delicately without clogging or looking heavy. It is like using watercolours to paint on the wall rather than trying to paint a picture with poly filler!

Linseed oil paint will actually never fade. Earth pigments are used in linseed oil paint. The linseed paint will dry out over time and may look faded. This is because wood will absorb the oil into the grain leaving the pigment to dry out. This is very easily and inexpensively corrected by applying the cleaned boiled linseed oil or the linseed oil wax every 5-10 years.

When modern paint manufacturers try to handle an organic, living material like linseed oil according to the same production principles used in producing cheap, chemical-based paints, the results are disappointing. We have seen a great deal of damage done over the years by power-washers, and we do not recommend their use except in the hands of professional house washers, operating from ladders or boom trucks.

acrylic topcoats are typically the best due to color retention properties and flexibility. It is important, however, to use an oil based primer before using the acrylic topcoat when painting over bleeding woods like Redwood or Cedar. Yes, however you may find you need to use the solution (80% boiled linseed oil and 20% mineral turpentine). Sometimes acrylic paint has been painted over old layers of oil-based paint, and again using the solution will usually enable this to be removed using the Speedheater Method?.

It is very easy to paint and clean up using these paints without having to use turpentine or other potentially hazardous solvents. Using mineral spirits for clean-up is a more involved process and includes concerns about disposal of the hazardous solvent at the end of the painting period. The paints seem highly pigmented and have that nice buttery quality found in traditional oils.
