It is definitely not a bad idea to use sachets of silica where the air is tight and moisture is trapped, like in boxes and items packed in plastics. Perhaps there was not enough Silica Gel put inside the container. You need about 40Kg Silica Gel for a 20" container. I can assure you a better result with Nordic Power Desiccants. There is no simple answer to this question as there will normally be Oxides of Carbon and Nitrogen in the mixture of exhaust gases which cannot be filtered out. The only way to protect against all the contaminants in vehicle exhaust would be with either a supplied air system or self contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).
