The best file formats for professional printing are eps and tif. They're high-quality, high-resolution and not lossy. (Lossy formats degrade and lose pixel information every time you open them. Usually it's not a noticeable thing, but over time it can be a problem. Jpegs are lossy.) Eps and tif formats can also be used with spot colors while jpeg and gif cannot. Plus, jpeg and gif were created mainly for use on the internet, so they usually emphasize size over quality.

TIF (also TIFF, Tagged Image Format) files are bitmap images (composed of tiny dots) recommended for all high-quality printing. TIF files have a resolution, a document size and a color model. 300 dpi (dots per inch) is the minimum recommeded resolution for printing. A TIF file's document size may be 8.5"x11" at 300 dpi, which means you will achieve an ideal print with the file at 8.5"x11" or smaller. Downsizing of image files is rarely a problem. Yes, although GIF and JPEG files are best suited for viewing on computer monitors. Due to compression, these image formats can occasionally lose unexpected detail or color. Small GIFs and JPEGs are an excellent way for us to preview your document quickly. The JPEG format is designed to compress real-world 24-bit color images. GIF files have already been reduced (usually by dithering) to 256-color (8-bit), so most of the original color information is lost. When they are converted to JPEG, the sharp transitions between neighboring pixels are not handled very well. Gifs are usually only best for images where there are large flat areas of a single colour, such as a diagram. Gifs can have transparent areas in them, and can be animated, which a jpeg can't. Gifs are also limited to 256 colours. Jpegs are preferrable to gifs for almost any image that isn't a diagram. Jpegs compress the data very well, meaning that your picture files will be smaller.
