This is mostly a matter of personal taste. Each race has pros and cons and the "best" race depends on individual play style. Pros: Good starting wisdom. Good faction with all "light" cities. Smallest experience penalty. Cons: Poor night vision but this is quickly overcome by spells. "Cookie cutter" race due to commonality. Pros: Natural Regen helps reduce downtime for all levels and helps when cannibalizing after level 24. Has 1 AC bonus per level.

There are many divergent opinions. Ultimately, it is up to you, and don't let someone else bully you into playing something you don't want to play! I would recommend playing a grey-aura scout or a grey-aura priest if you're new to SK. Playing a scout allows you some independence and the ability to explore the huge outdoor world, as well as pick up pets and herbs to help you along the way. Playing a priest is a great way to get quickly enmeshed in the politics and goings-on of SK.

All race specific techs give different advantages. The game is designed to be balanced so that one race doesn't have a significant advantage over another. The general "trend" is that Cyborg have greater production capacity, Human have higher energy and science production, and Bionic have the possibility of highest efficiency over time.

Whatever race suits your fancy. As the levels increase equipment effects swamp racial attributes, you couldn't tell a well-equipped ratonga from a well-equipped high elf, unless of course you had a sense of smell and / or a snootiness detector.
