Any juror who fails to report for jury duty and who is not excused by the Court may be served a Show Cause Order by the U.S. Marshals Service. Subsequently, those jurors will be required to show cause why they should not be held in contempt of the Jury Selection Act. Contempt penalties range from a fine of $100.00 to three days imprisonment, or both (U.S.C. 28 Section 1866(g)).

There are penalties. If you fail to report when summoned for jury duty, you may receive an order to show cause from the Court. The order will require you to explain why you did not obey the summons. U.S. Code Section 1866 provides: “Any person summoned for jury service who fails to appear as directed shall be ordered by the district court to appear forthwith and show cause for his/her failure to comply with the summons. Any person who fails to show good cause for noncompliance with a summons may be fined not more than $100.00 and or imprisoned not more than three (3) days.”

If you fail to report to jury duty or do not complete the questionnaire, you may receive a summons and be required to explain to the Administrative Judge as to why this information was not provided or why you did not report. You may also be subject to arrest and possibly a fine.

Be sure to check the jury recording before reporting for servvice if you have been summoned for petit jury service.

Late reports may result in a penalty of $20 or .05 percent of the gross payroll, whichever is greater, for each month or fraction of a month such report remains delinquent. Contributions not paid by the due date will accrue interest at a rate of 1.5 percent per month or fraction of a month, until all due amounts are received. In addition, a cost of collection fee of 20 percent of any deficiency assessed may be imposed.

You will only have to repeat the areas that are deficient and not have to repeat the whole entire process again. The fee will be $800/scanner for clinical or phantom images and $1600/scanner if you have to repeat both. You will have 60 days to submit the repeated images.

On days when your attendance is not required you should continue your normal schedule of work, school, etc.

You must call 248-858-0029 after 5:00 p.m. the day before your appearance date. You may call after 5:00 p.m. on Friday and through the weekend for a Monday appearance date. A recorded message will instruct you by participant number and confirm your reporting date and time.

When you arrive on the second floor of the Courthouse you will check in with the jury commissioner at the sign-in desk where you will be given further instructions. After all jurors have been checked in, you will go through our juror orientation program. You will view a video and the bailiff will go over many other areas of concern. You do not need any special skills, training, or legal knowledge to be a juror.

Failure to appear for jury service when summoned is a serious matter. You may be held in contempt of court and could be fined and/or imprisoned. It is in your best interest to appear if you are summoned to avoid any further action.

Yes. The parties in a case generally seek to settle their differences and avoid the time and expense of a trial. Sometimes the case is settled just moments before it is scheduled to begin. So, even though several cases are scheduled for a day, the court doesn't know until that morning how many will actually go to trial. Yes, federal jurors are paid $40 a day. (Employees of the federal government are paid their regular salary in lieu of this fee.)
