It is a total lack of oxygen. We see this term in cases involving babies who are not delivered in a timely fashion, causing some form of damage to their brain. It is also seen in anesthesia cases where the patient did not receive sufficient oxygen during the procedure, or their oxygen was cut off during the procedure. Anoxia has been shown to cause brain damage if prolonged.
