How can I ensure that my Azaleas will keep blooming?

Reeders Landscaping
Fertilize Azaleas immediately after they bloom with a good 3-1-2 or 4-1-2 ratio fertilizer. This will promote vigorous new growth for the rest of the season. Repeat the application in late May or early June, for growth. In September, apply a specialized Azalea food. This fertilizer will usually have camellia and gardenia written on the label as well. These fertilizers are high in phosphorus (the middle number) which stimulates the bud set before going into winter.

When should I prune my azaleas?

Ask a Master Gardener
Prune immediately after blooming in the spring, but no later than September 1 or you will get little or no blooms the following spring.

What do I do when my phalaenopsis stops blooming?

Orchid Care Tips
If your plant has healthy, with thick, green leaves that have not become wrinkled or drooping, cut the old flower stem up high, just above a "node" and just below the lowest bloom. The plant will frequently send out a new flowering branch at that location. If your plant has thin, wilted leaves, or if the plant is small, with only 3-to-4-inch-long leaves, it is best to cut the flower stem all the way down, so that the plant does not weaken itself by blooming again right away.

Bulbs Why should spring blooming bulbs be planted in the fall?

Frequently Asked Questions: High Country Gardens
Feed the bulbs in early spring with a recommended bulb fertilizer or one low in nitrogen. Allow the bulbs to bloom as usual. Wait until the foliage dies back and separates easily from the bulb when given a gentle tug. If you cannot transplant them immediately, mark their location and transplant anytime through late summer. Fertilize again in fall.

Where should I cut off the flower spike after the plant finishes blooming?

ORCHIDS.COM : SUPPORT : FAQ
The answer to this question depends upon the type of orchid in question. Phalaenopsis plants may flower again for a second time. After the plant goes out of bloom, cut the stem right below the first flower on the spray. A new spray of flowers may emerge from the node below it. For all other orchids, cut off the old flower spike at the base of the plant.

Where is it blooming right now?

Brown Tide FAQ
It's almost impossible to say exactly where the brown tide is at any given moment, because blooms constantly expand and contract and move around in response to winds and tides. It's important to realize that brown tides are patchy and don't cover the expanse of the Laguna Madre. They often concentrate in areas sheltered from the wind or tidal currents. TPWD and university researchers will continue tracking the location and movement of brown tide.

What is chalking, what is blooming?

Color Center - Color Handbook - FAQ
Weathering of a panel coated with a paint containing TiO2 can show an effect called chalking. It is a sign for an incompatibility of the white pigment in the paint formulation as through the influence of weathering the white pigment is forced out of the paint film forming a white rough layer of TiO2 on the surface of the panel. The effect where the colored pigment is forced out of the paint film after weathering is called blooming.

What is the difference between rhododendrons and azaleas? What about deciduous azaleas?

Mason-Dixon Rhododendron FAQ
Azaleas are rhododendrons, part of the Ericaceae or Heath family. Plants commonly called azaleas have thinner, more pointed, hairy leaves. The plants commonly called rhododendrons and azaleas are different enough, however, that they seldom cross-breed. Deciduous azaleas lose all their leaves in winter and are genetically different enough from the evergreen types that they rarely cross breed. Cultural requirements are pretty much the same for all rhododendrons, including the deciduous azaleas.

Fall-blooming salvias such as leucantha should be pruned during the summer to keep them compact, reducing the need for staking. To make the job easier, use hedging shears, and remove only the spent flowers and a few inches of stem below. Any of this type of pruning should be completed prior to September 1, since flower buds begin forming about that time.

Safflower blooming in mid-summer Q How is Saffola® Oil made?

A Saffola Oil is made from the seeds of the safflower plant. The plants (of the thistle family) are very hardy and drought resistant, with an aggressive tap root that can search up to 12 feet for water. My azaleas have aphids. How many times should I spray them? How many days in between applications?

Ask a Master Gardener
We prefer to suggest non-chemical means of battling bugs. Knock them off the plant with a strong spray of water. If you feel inundated, you can initially treat with an insecticidal soap or an ultra-refined horticultural oil. Spray every 7 to 10 days as needed. Verify there is a new infestation before spraying again. I have hundreds of tiny bright orange bugs on my milkweed plants, particularly the seedpods. I thought they were strange aphids, but today I noticed a bunch that was bigger.

What do I do when my wildflowers are finished blooming?

Frequently Asked Questions about Wildflowers from Clyde Robi...
Clyde Robin. Once your flowers have finished blooming, they will normally start to dry up and set their seed for the following year. If you wait till the seed has matured, it will replenish your garden for fresh flowers in the spring. You can check to see if the seed pods are mature by opening one or two of them. If the seeds are brownish or black, or if they have started to harden up, they are OK for cutting. Once cut, you can just leave them on the ground.
