Persons who respond to hepatitis B vaccine are protected against acute hepatitis B and the chronic consequences of HBV infection, including cirrhosis and liver cancer for approximately 15 years. Some scientists believe that life-long immunity may be provided by the vaccine.

Even after a pandemic influenza virus has been identified, it could take at least 6 months to develop, test and produce vaccine.

When the body is exposed to foreign organisms, the immune system produces antibodies, which are specific to the infecting agent, and their first function is to help the body, and kill the foreign organisms. The antibodies remain in the body and recognise any future infection with the same organism. This is known as active immunity.
