Yes. Beginning in January 2008, a licensee who has been lapsed for more than the current renewal period must document having earned at least 24 hours in the two years prior to reinstatement. A license that has been lapsed for less than two years will be required to earn a pro-rated number of hours, e.g., a licensee that has been lapsed for thirteen months must have 13 hours of Continuing Education credits within the last two years in order to reinstate.

There are two types of lapsed license: Lapsed for education and lapsed for fees. If your license has lapsed for education, then you failed to complete the 25 hour POST education course within the first year of licensure.

Dentists are required to complete 40 hours of continuing education (CE) every two years. If you are a new licensee, these credits are pro-rated. Board regulations also specify permissible types of CE. Please consult the Boards regulations at N.J.A.C 13:30-5.1. Registered Dental Hygienists are required to complete 20 CE hours and Registered Dental Assistants are required to complete 10 CE hours with each biennial registration cycle. A lapsed license is one that has not been renewed or placed on inactive status. Once lapsed, it can become a lengthy and sometimes costly process to have it renewed. It requires payment of a penalty fee, the renewal fees for each year that the licensee practiced nursing and the renewal fee for the current renewal period. inactive license is one that has been voluntarily requested to be placed "on hold" for an undetermined period of time during which no renewal fees are paid.

If you are lapsed, you must apply for reinstatement. The reinstatement form is available on the website under Renewal and Reinstatement. You will be required to earn the PDH's to get your license reinstated up to the current year and then earn the PDH's to get you renewed for the current year. There is also a reinstatement fee. The hours and fee would depend on how long your license has been lapsed. You would be required to provide documentation of your continuing education.

You are not required to obtain the continuing education throughout the period of inactive status. Courses which are not approved by TDLR as continuing education courses can not be used for license renewal. If the college course is a TDLR approved continuing education course, then the course hours can be used for license renewal. If you have taken a course from one or more providers, each provider must transmit that information to TDLR and also issue you a certificate of course completion. No. TDLR does not accept partial completion of a continuing education course. However, a provider may allow you to finish the course at another time; when the course is fully completed, the provider will transmit the completion record to TDLR. Yes. TDLR requires the provider to monitor licensee attendance for all courses, including computer-based and on-line courses. If a licensee does not meet the provider’s monitoring requirements, no continuing education hours will be given.
