What is the difference between .gif and .jpeg?

Inventive-Design
GIF is short for Graphics Interchange Format. GIF's advantages is that it is supported by practically all web browsers, can include transparent backgrounds, supports interlacing (providing a low-resolution preview of the graphic to the viewer while it downloads), and can be used as an image map (allowing the viewer to click on the graphic as they would a regular link to another site.) GIF's disadvantages are that it can only support 8-bit color (or a palette no greater than 256 colors).

GIMP - Documentation
You need to manually get libgif and libjpeg and compile and install them on your system. They will install by default in /usr/local/lib, so once they're installed, you have to make sure that LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/local/lib or put /usr/local/lib in your ld.so configuration file. In addition, you also have to remove libgif.* and libjpeg.* from your /usr/lib directory, as these will be found first (and even if you finagle ld. See similar questions...

Should I choose gif or jpeg, and what quality?

Photoshop and Web Design FAQ
Gifs are usually only best for images where there are large flat areas of a single colour, such as a diagram. Gifs can have transparent areas in them, and can be animated, which a jpeg can't. Gifs are also limited to 256 colours. Jpegs are preferrable to gifs for almost any image that isn't a diagram. Jpegs compress the data very well, meaning that your picture files will be smaller. This compression creates inaccuracies though, but these inaccuracies are not usually noticeable. See similar questions...

Why do my GIF files look bad when converted to JPEG?

ThumbsPlus FAQ
The JPEG format is designed to compress real-world 24-bit color images. GIF files have already been reduced (usually by dithering) to 256-color (8-bit), so most of the original color information is lost. When they are converted to JPEG, the sharp transitions between neighboring pixels are not handled very well. The Smoothing option in the Save JPEG Options dialog box may improve the situation somewhat. ThumbsPlus quickly dithers 24-bit images for display on 8-bit displays. See similar questions...
