When you first install Tiger, Spotlight is indexing your harddrive(s). Whenever you attach a FW-drive, for example, Spotlight also does its job. Under Windows 9x, eConsole registers as using 100% of the available CPU time while idle. This does not, however, reflect the actual machine load, since the computer remains accessible and responsive as usual under Windows 9x. The cause for this phenomenon seems to be within the metering API of Windows 9x - under NT, eConsole registers with between 0% and 3% CPU load while idle, which is what one should expect.

In the HIL drivers we poll the HIL ports with a few timers simultanously and those timers seem to increase the ksoftirqd load a lot. But although the load seems to be very high, the machine will be fully functional at maximum speed and it seems to us as if this is only a cosmetical problem which is maybe caused by some bugs in the load calculation functions in the Linux kernel.
