What engine oil or fuel additives should I use and why?

Herguth - Frequently Asked Questions
Modern engine oils and fuels are carefully formulated to offer the best possible performance over a wide range of operating condition. There are occasions where an additive not contained in the oil or fuel will improve performance in one respect or another. However, there are also additives that will cause harm to the system. If aftermarket additives are used they should be thoroughly tested and offer more proof of performance than simple testimonial letters or anecdotal evidence.

But my engine manufacturer does not recommend the use of fuel additives. Why?

PRI-D, PRI-G - FAQ'S @ Survival Unlimited .com - Fuel stabil...
Given the fact that literally thousands of fuel additives are offered on the market, engine manufacturers have no way of monitoring or testing the claims of so many products - making it difficult to determine specific products that are safe to use. However, PRI chemistry does not alter any fuel specifications issued by engine manufacturers - specifications by which manufacturers judge whether or not a particular fuel affects safe engine operation.

What kind of oil and oil additives should I use in my 914?

Pelican Parts: 914 FAQ Version 2.7
There is a continual debate about what type of oil to put in your car. My own opinion is that, if you use a high-quality motor oil of the correct weight, it doesn’t matter which one you use. Some people advise against putting synthetic oils in VWs or Porsches. There is a myth that they do not dissipate heat as well as conventional "dinosaur" oils. This is untrue—some of them have tested out better than dino oils.

What Engine Oil and Lubricants should I use?

CraneCams
Crane Cams does not recommend the use of synthetic oils during the initial break-in period for a new camshaft. Use a good quality grade of naturally formulated motor oil during this period. If you choose to use synthetic oil after the engine has been broken in, change the oil filter and follow the oil manufacturer's instructions.

Should I use "Oil Restrictors" in my engine?

CraneCams
No, Crane Cams does not recommend the use of oil restrictors. The oil is the life blood of the engine, not only lubricating but cooling the engine components as well. For example, a valve spring builds in temperature as it compresses and relaxes. This increase of temperature affects the characteristics of the spring material, and if excessive, will shorten the life of the spring. Oil is the only means the spring has for cooling.

What is the oil to fuel ratio I must use for my boat?

BONZÍ SPORTS Frequently Asked Questions - Have a Zeno...
For our Zenoah-powered boats, we recommend a 20:1 or 25:1 mixture of a quality 2 cycle synthetic oil. Zenoah recommends 90 or higher octane unleaded fuel (although we have quite a few customers who have had success with 87-89 octane). We recommend a mixture of 25:1 (5 oz of oil to 1 gal of gas) or 20:1 (6 oz of oil). Either will work for you, but you should pick one mixture and not change. The oil needs to be a good 2 stroke synthetic. We recommend AMSOIL.

Can I tune the engine to use another octane fuel?

In general, modern engine management systems will compensate for fuel octane, and once you have satisfied the optimum octane requirement, you are at the optimum overall performance area of the engine map. Tuning changes to obtain more power will probably adversely affect both fuel economy and emissions. Unless you have access to good diagnostic equipment that can ensure regulatory limits are complied with, it is likely that adjustments may be regarded as illegal tampering by local authorities.
