Yes you do. In order to establish a non-addressable system, it is essential to have a converter. A cable ready TV, VCR and a Cable Company box do not provide for this feature and in not doing so, cannot replace a converter. You must have a converter to use a descrambler. Yes, ViaTV is compatible with all other video accessories. The user manual supplied with the ViaTV Videophone provides complete instructions for connecting it with both VCRs and cable converters. You can not use a Desktop Videophone with a TV or a VCR.

Long answer: The minimum requirement for reproducing audio and video on DVD is an MPEG video stream and a PCM audio track. (Other streams such as Dolby Digital audio, MPEG audio, and subpicture are not necessary for the simplest case.) Basic DVD control codes are also needed. At the moment it's difficult in real time to encode the video and audio, combine them with DVD-V info, and write the whole thing to DVD. Even if you could do all this in a home recorder, it would be extremely expensive.

Everyone wants these to be TV's, but in most instances they are actually more closely related to the VCR. In a lot of models the only remote control that will satisfactorily work combo sets is the manufacturers original. It's generally not a good idea to route the video from your DVD player through your VCR. Most movies use Macrovision protection, which will cause problems such as a repeated darkening and lightening of the picture. See 1.11 and the Video RF section of 3.2 and for more info.

Our boats are equipped with generators so you can bring a TV/VCR. Don’t bring a TV alone as you won’t pick up any channels out on the lake. Our Lady of the Lake Series boat comes with a TV/VCR so don’t forget to bring some tapes along if you wish. Many people enjoy not having a TV.

Simply connect your coaxial cable into the HUSKYvision faceplate (the faceplate with only one coax connection) and the input jack on your cable-ready TV or VCR. Coaxial cables are available at the UConn Coop. If you have a VCR, connect your coaxial cable from the cable INPUT to the HUSKYvision faceplate. Then connect the OUTPUT jack from your VCR to the INPUT jack on your TV.
