When do hedgehogs hibernate?

The timing of hibernation does depend on many things including the weather. When it gets very cold, they will hibernate (if they are fit and fat enough) because their natural food disappears in the cold weather. Can I house two hedgehogs together?

The Hedgehog Welfare Society - FAQ Sheet
There is not a yes or no answer to this. Unaltered males and females should NEVER be housed together or you will have babies. It is not a good idea to put two males together. There are some that get along, but more often than not they will, at some point, fight. It is quite possible to put females together, but there are still some situations were there personalities just aren't right for cohabitation. When you first put them together, be sure to monitor them closely for possible problems. See similar questions...

Will all vets see hedgehogs?

The Hedgehog Welfare Society - FAQ Sheet
Absolutely not! It's a good idea to research the vets in your area before you have an emergency. You would want to look for a vet with experience treating hedgehogs...usually one that is an "exotic" vet. A lot of vets will say they'll treat hedgehogs but have little or no experience with them. There is a list of hedgehog friendly vets on this website (hedgehogwelfare.org) listed by state, so that's a good place to start. See similar questions...

Subject: <3.2> Where are hedgehogs illegal?

Hedgehog FAQ, Part 2
Unfortunately, there are some locations that do not yet allow pet hedgehogs. The IHA [2.5] can possibly help provide guidance on how you can enlighten any backward bureaucracies you run into. The list below started as a very stripped down version of the last list published by the N.A.H.A. to which I have also included additional notes thanks to people sending me information. the moment hedgehogs are not permitted in the U.S. See similar questions...

Subject: <3.6> Do hedgehogs smell?

Hedgehog FAQ, Part 2
People who have had experience with small pet rodents, or with ferrets seem to ask this question most often. Hedgehogs do not have scent glands like ferrets, and as long as their cage or pen is kept reasonably clean there is generally very little odour. Most (some?) hedgehogs can be trained to use a litter box, making the task of keeping the cage clean that much easier. See similar questions...

Subject: <3.7> Do hedgehogs have tails?

Hedgehog FAQ, Part 2
Yes, but barely. There really is a tail under there. Most hedgehogs have only a pointed little nub of tail that spends almost all of its time hidden under the quills. This leaves the poor hedgehog looking for all the world like he doesn't have a tail. My hhog, Ambergris, uses her tail - it isn't a useless appendage. She uses it as a pusher when she is trying to go underneath stuff. Strange and wondrous. See similar questions...

How do snails hibernate or estivate?

Snail & Slug Frequently Asked Questions [Pet Snails]
In hibernation or aestivation operculate and pulmonate snails react similarly. The heart of the pulmonate may slow down from 36 beats per minute to only three or four. In the operculates it may drop from 53 to only two to three times per minute. As an indication of how much body processes are slowed down, a hibernating pulmonate at 30°F will use as little as 1/50th the amount of oxygen used by an active snail at 59°F. Do opossums hibernate during winter?

The 'Possum Pages: FAQs
Opossums do not hibernate. Their greatest challenge during winter, especially in colder climates, is simply to survive. Very often opossums will alter their foraging habits during winter, coming out during the day when it is warmer rather than at night. It is not uncommon for opossums in northern regions to suffer frostbite during extremely cold periods. Their tails are particularly susceptible to frostbite as they have no fur covering to protect them. See similar questions...

No, not in the sense that hedgehogs hibernate. Badgers will put on a lot of weight in the autumn to see them through the lean winter months, when earth worms and other foods are harder to come by.
