People with seasonal allergic rhinitis (hay fever) only experience symptoms during the time of year when certain allergens are in the air outdoors. When most people talk about allergy season, they're referring to springtime, when plants bloom and tree pollen counts soar. However, summer is the season for grass and weed pollen allergies, and autumn is the time for ragweed and mold allergies.

A food allergy occurs when the immune system mistakenly believes that a harmless substance, in this case a food item, is harmful. In an attempt to protect the body, it creates IgE antibodies to that food. The next time the individual eats that food, the immune system releases massive amounts of chemicals and histamines in order to protect the body.

A pollen count is the measure of the amount of pollen in the air. Pollen counts are commonly included in local weather reports and are usually reported for mold spores and three types of pollen: grasses, trees, and weeds. The count is reported as grains of pollen per square meter of air collected over 24 hours. This number represents the concentration of all the pollen in the air in a certain area at a specific time.

Several years of treatment are required to attain lasting improvement, which persists long-term after injections are stopped, in the patient's allergic condition. The duration of treatment is determined for each patient on an individualized basis. If injections are given for less than three years, relapse is expected.

Allergy seasons vary throughout the country. In general terms, the early spring is the time for tree pollens. Grass pollen usually is present in the late spring, early summer, and weed pollens are present in the late summer and early fall. In warmer climates, each of these seasons may start earlier; vice versa for colder climates. Some parts of the country have less weed pollens than others, so their prime pollen season may end earlier.
