In order for a candle to work properly it needs to pass melted wax through the wick. Beeswax melts at a higher temperature and requires thicker wicks, therefore it is necessary to hold the lighter next to the wick for a longer time than other candles.

This white film, called bloom, is normal and occurs to all pure beeswax. This is caused because some of the components of the beeswax migrate to the surface. Bloom can be easily removed by wiping the candle with a soft cloth, applying gentle heat with a hair dryer, or placing the candle in warm sunlight. Even though the bloom is easily removable, many people actually desire this effect as it tends to give the beeswax candle a unique and rustic look and feel.

Yes, all Johnston Honey candles contain only beeswax. Some commercially available candles are labeled "beeswax" but only contain 50% beeswax and the rest is paraffin.

Our beeswax is from our own Michigan honeybees and other local beekeepers. The wax is from the nectar of clovers, thistles and other wildflowers native to our area. The wax is not filtered, only lightly strained.

It's all personal preference of course, but I use a specially anointed white candle to light all others. When I'm done, I either allow the ritual candle to burn itself out or I use a snuffer. A more natural, unfiltered wax is preferred for our handmade candles at Honeyflow Farm. We use only "straining" (with cheesecloth type material) and "settling" (the wax debris either floats or settles to the bottom of the tank) procedures to clean the wax, leaving clean, raw beeswax for your candles. This procedure will not affect the beeswax smell, color, or texture.

All candles, especially highly scented ones like mine, will produce some smoke and soot, but proper burning (keeping wick trimmed and avoiding drafts, etc.) will help eliminate this problem.

Chances are, the wick has been cut too short. If a wick becomes too short to light, carve away enough wax around the wick(s) in order to re-light the wick(s). You may get a fairly large flame at first, but as the melt pool expands, the level of the melt pool will rise, creating a smaller flame. When you have achieved a full melt pool, you can extinguish the flame(s), let the wax cool, then trim again if necessary.

The term "hugging a candle" simply refers to gently pressing the outer edge of your pillar or grubby candle inward after the candle has burned long enough for the outer edge to become pliable. When you do this, the inner edge of the candle should be close enough to the flame to melt into the melt pool. You will increase the burn time of your candle by doing this.

The black you see is carbon. An excessively large flame will produce carbon due to lack of sufficient oxygen from the air in the jar to provide complete combustion. The updraft of hot gases from combustion hinders diffusion of air into the jar and that starves the flame of oxygen. The key for that perfect burning candle is wick maintenance. The wick must be trimmed to no more than 1/4" throughout the candle life. The candle can be burned for several hours without trimming.
