Several years ago, we embarked on an ambitious program to remove iron from our water in some of our service areas. We investigated numerous technologies available to remove iron from water and have been installing numerous iron removal systems in communities along the South Shore. In those areas where the systems have been installed, the results have been impressive and customer complaints have dropped dramatically.

Our softeners will remove certain types of iron from water. There are several types of iron found in water. If it is a soluble iron, commonly known as ferrous iron, and is not more than 3 ppm, then in most cases it will remove it from your water. Other forms of iron, such as ferric iron requires the installation of a separate "iron filter" which looks very similar to a softener without the salt or brine tank.

Water softeners are designed to soften water by chemically attracting various elements to the resin media. Pour-through water filters (like Brita) do not remove fluoride from the water. Either reverse osmosis or distillation must occur for fluoride to be removed. How can I remove the melted and cohered rubber from my iron's bottom? Although our iron-on labels are designed NOT to be removed, if you have a need to remove them, then we suggest you try the following. Cover the label with a THIN, DRY pressing cloth or handkerchief, and using the hottest heat setting that your garment will withstand, apply heat for 10-15 seconds. Immediately, before the label cools, try to lift the edge of the label with your fingernail. Continue heating and peeling the label from your garment. Be careful not to burn yourself or the garment.

If you have high colour in your water it is most likely a concentration of tannins. High tannin levels are found in most surface water supplies and some groundwater or simply in waters where large quantities of vegetation have decayed. Unfortunately tannins cannot simply be removed from water by a physical means of filtration. Tannins can be described as a colloidal suspension as it carries a negative charge and therefore will not simply fall out of solution like turbidity does.

Because some of the water will evaporate, boiling water can increase the concentration of arsenic in your water. Disinfecting water by chlorination or by using most mechanical filters is also NOT effective in removing arsenic from water. However, there are several types of filters that can be used, including reverse osmosis, ultra-filtration, and ion exchange.

Ferrous Iron: It is often called "clear iron" and the iron particles are no visible in the water. The iron particle will rust once they interact with air. This form of iron can not be mechanical filtered from the water. It can be treated by ion exchange using a water softener or water conditioner or a Manganese Greensand Iron Filter.
