Transparent background only works for Python 2.4 or with patched Python 2.3. The code to enable background transparency is already in Zinc however Python 2.1 through 2.3 by default does not have the ability to do transparent background.

There is no way to give an applet a transparent background that lets the web browser background show through. You can simulate it by giving the applet a background that matches the underlying browser background. If your image doesn't have an alpha channel, add one with Layers->Add Alpha Channel. Select the area you want to clear (if not the whole image). To change everything of a particular color transparent, pick Select->By Color... and click on the color in the image you want to replace. Then select Edit->Clear. That's it.
