This information is printed next to the appropriate tax description on your earning statement. If you do not see any information about exemptions, then you are either claiming Exempt or your wages are less than the amount that would require a tax deduction, based upon your current W-4 setup. Please come into the Payroll Office for any clarification.

You may only claim one of the two exemptions. To claim the exemption, you must file an application with the Harris County Appraisal District. The application must include documentation of your disability. The application form is entitled "Application for Residential Homestead Exemption." This form can be obtained from the Customer Service Division for the Harris County Appraisal District. In it, you should complete all applicable information.

Exemption from income tax withholding. Generally, an employee may claim exemption from income tax withholding because he or she had no income tax liability last year and expects none this year. See the Form W-4 instructions for more information. However, the wages are still subject to social security and Medicare taxes. A Form W-4 claiming exemption from withholding is valid for only one calendar year.

Prescription medicine and prescribed medical devices are exempt from LAGs restrictions, including storage containers required for temperature control of medicines on board. You should determine the reasonable quantity of non-prescription medication required for the duration of your flight, as it may be assessed by security screening staff. Reasonable amounts include what is required for length of the flight as well as possible delays and flight diversions.

Resident aliens can claim personal exemptions and exemptions for dependents in the same way as United States citizens. However, nonresident aliens generally can claim only a personal exemption for themselves on their United States tax return. There are special rules for residents of Mexico, Canada, Japan, South Korea; for United States nationals; and for students and business apprentices from India.

It may be possible to obtain partial exemption from the RTP based on prior achievement of the University's RTP objectives. Any claim for exemption must therefore demonstrate how all/some of the objectives have already been achieved, and must be accompanied by full and detailed documentary evidence. Please note that even if you are applying for an exemption from the RTP, you still need to complete an RTP Registration form.

The first thing we suggest is that you fill out the worksheet at the top of the W-4 form. You may claim any number of exemptions you see fit; however, you a reliable at year-end for any taxes owed to the IRS. There is no limit as to how frequently you may change the information on your W-4; however, UNC will not accept invalid W-4's. (Invalid includes false information or changing exemptions from paycheck to paycheck without a change in dependent status.)

There are two resources available to help you make that determination. The first and very good resource is HRConnect . There is a feature called "calculators" that contains a net pay estimator program. In this program, you can make changes in your salary information, W-4, payroll deductions, etc and it will calculate what your taxes and net pay will be. Another resource is IRS Publication 15.

When you are hired, your supervisor must submit a Student Hire Form to Human Resources, you will not be paid until we have not received that form. Was your time sheet turned in on time? Time sheets received by the Office of Human Resources after the payroll deadline will not be processed in the regular payroll.

You are not required to submit a new W-4 form each year unless you have claimed "Exempt". If you claim "Exempt" on your W-4, please be aware it will expire on December 31st of each year. If a new W-4 form is not submitted, your tax withholding will automatically default to a single filing status with zero allowances.

Form W-4 (Employee's Withholding Allowance Certificate), is used to calculate the correct amount of federal income tax to withhold from an employee's wages. Form W-4 must be completed by each employee on or before their first day of work. If no W-4 form is on file, employers must withhold the maximum amount from employee paychecks. Employers must keep a form W-4 on file for each employee.

It may take up to seven days for your claim form to reach the Colonial office. Claims processing may take up to 14 business days. You can find out if we have received your claim 24 hours a day, seven days a week, by calling the Colonial Service Center at 1-800-325-4368 and using the Automated Service option.
