The cable between your guitar and amp (or effects) has to be shielded to prevent picking up noise (electromagnetic radiation from lights, motors, radio, etc). If you use unshielded cable (such as 99.9999% of all speaker cable) this noise will get amplified and drown out your guitar signal in a horrible flood of sonic mayhem.
