Can I use a guitar cable as a speaker cable?

AGA - The General FAQ
Not a good idea. It might work for a while, but it's risky. Especially if you are pushing high power through a cable with a small center conductor, you risk either an open circuit when the conductor dies, or more likely melted insulation as the inner conductor gets hot, resulting in a short circuit. Neither is very good for your amp. Also, the additional capacitance in the cable will adversely affect the impedance your amp sees.

Can I use a speaker cable as a guitar cable?

AGA - The General FAQ
Nope. You probably won't try this more than once. The cable between your guitar and amp (or effects) has to be shielded to prevent picking up noise (electromagnetic radiation from lights, motors, radio, etc). If you use unshielded cable (such as 99.9999% of all speaker cable) this noise will get amplified and drown out your guitar signal in a horrible flood of sonic mayhem.

Are gold plated plugs on my guitar cable better?

Highlander Musical Audio Products. Frequently Asked Question...
Gold plated plugs can actually cause problems. When plugged in to a regular nickel plated socket, the dissimilar metals can create distortion (through a slight diode action). The real benefit of gold plated connectors is that they do not tarnish, but they must be mated with gold sockets.

I don't have a speaker cable. Can I use an instrument cable to connect my amp to my speakers?

SWR® - Amplify Your Future™
No. Using instrument cables to connect your speakers can result in intermittent power loss, amp oscillation and speaker damage, as well as rendering the cables useless for any purpose. We recommend using 18-gauge or heavier speaker cables.

Is it OK to use a hifi speaker with my guitar amp?

AX84 - The General FAQ
There is a big difference between guitar amp use and PA or HiFi use of speakers, and in some areas the advice and issues are almost exactly opposite-- but both correct in their given areas. In HiFi and PA use you must never let the amps clip. Once you do the amp will begin to deliver significant amounts of energy in relatively high frequencies. A PA of a HiFi rig will have high frequency drivers, whose power handling capabilities are by necessity vastly lower than those of the bass drivers.

What gauge speaker wire should I use in my system?

Amplifier Frequently Asked Questions
For the best speaker damping and least amount of power loss you will want to use the heaviest gauge that is practical. The length of the speaker wire should be considered when considering wire gauge. The shorter the run, the smaller gauge you can use with minimum power and damping factor loss. The longer the run, the heavier gauge you will need to minimize power and damping factor loss. You will also want to consider the size of power amplifier you are using.

Can I use an ordinary guitar cable on the "line out"?

FAQs All about the QChord
Yes, you can use an ordinary 1/4 inch guitar cable. The output will be a mono signal, and will sound great through an amplifier. However, you're giving up the fantastic stereo sound output from the QChord. See connecting to stereo.

What should I use for a center speaker?

FAQ
I have no Home Theater setup. The ORION can certainly be used for a Home Theater, especially when the THOR subwoofer is added. My primary interest is music reproduction and the arrival of discrete multi-channel audio in the form of SACD and DVD-A was driving me to investigate the center channel issue. I have reported on my findings and have no pressing need for either center or surround speakers.

Can I use any cable?

Frequently Asked Questions - A Laplink Alternative. Data Tra...
No - You must use a 'Laplink Parallel Port' cable. It is a specially cross-wired cable and has a 25 pin male connector at each end. A straight-through cable and other cables may look the same but will not work with file-transfer programs. There is more info on the cable at cable.html including a cable pin-map for those with a continuity tester. The right cable is available at most local computer stores. We don't maintain a list of suppliers of the cable - there are so many of them.

Do I have to use quartersawn wood for the back and sides of my acoustic guitar?

Musical Instrument Makers Forum miniFAQ: Acoustic Guitar Mak...
Quartersawn wood is the most dimensionally stable, but some woods like birds-eye maple must be flat-sawn for the figure to show. If you have some gorgeous or rare flat-sawn wood that you want to use, it may well be worth the risk; if it's an inexpensive piece of a common wood, you may be risking the longevity of your guitar for no good reason.

Should I use flatsawn or quartersawn wood for my guitar neck?

Musical Instrument Makers Forum miniFAQ: Acoustic Guitar Mak...
Conventional wisdom on the MIMForum is that grain orientation does not matter for bolt-on solid-body necks. For acoustics, it is traditional to use quartersawn wood. Some builders laminate flatsawn wood (face to face) to create what is in effect a quartersawn neck blank:

Can I use the Cabbone with a bass guitar amplifier?

Tonebone Cabbone speaker cabinet switcher - Frequently Asked...
Absolutely! Bass tones will vary dramatically when driving through a 4-10 cabinet as opposed to a 2-15. Keep in mind that the Cabbone is designed to work with 100 Watt amplifiers. Using a more powerful amp at high volumes could cause the relays to arc. To make sure you do not damage the Cabbone or your amps, make sure you do not drive more than 100 Watts through the Cabbone.
