To access the wireless network, a user must agree to abide by the terms of the library's wireless network user agreement. Information about the equipment needed is contained in this agreement.

Wireless access is available on all floors of the library. Look for the purple banners hanging from the ceiling that indicate wireless access areas.

Yes. However, students must register their wireless computer or other wireless-network device with the campus Information Technology department to access the network. Call 698-2330 or go to the Information Technology Help Desk located at the Multiservice Center for more information on registering your personal wireless computer.

You will need a library card and a personal identification number (PIN) to log on. Please go to the Customer Service Desk if you need assistance with either of these.

Yes. There are wireless capabilities in two places in the library: at the front of the library and in the atrium area. Access requires an IEEE 802.11b compliant network card. The card may be purchased at the university bookstore or from most electronic stores. Users will currently be able to access the Internet from the wireless network. This includes all WTAMU web sites, such as Student Email, Buff Advisor, and WTOnline.

Access to campus wireless networks requires a University of Utah Network ID and password, the same one that students use to access grades and personal portals, and faculty and staff use for administrative purposes. In addition, on Microsoft Windows and older Mac OS X systems, it requires installation of a special client program on your computer that is used in the initial connection to provide for authentication, as described here. The Frick Art Reference Library was founded to serve "adults with a serious interest in art," among them scholars, art professionals, collectors, and students. The Library is, therefore, open to all researchers with or without institutional affiliation. No appointment is necessary to use the Library. The Library is open to all researchers free of charge. First-time researchers are asked to arrive before 3:00 p.m. on weekdays or before 11:00 a.m. on Saturdays, and to bring a photo ID.

Limit the number of DHCP addresses to the number of wireless access points that you will be using. Optionally, set static IP addresses, set to non-standard network blocks. Consider using VPN, SSL, Firewalls, RADIUS, Kerberos or other access control, or end-to-end encryption. Most of these can be integrated into your 802.11b appliance.

The campus wireless network can handle hundreds of users logged in at any one time, but the more active users, the slower the network becomes. On average, one access point can handle approximately 30 users without a noticeable degradation in performance.

In some cases, University Computing and Communications (C&C) must block a compromised system from accessing the UW network in order to protect other networked systems. If your system is blocked, contact Lawhelp so we may properly disinfect and/or patch your system and inform C&C that your network access can be restored.
