Out of the six lawngrasses that will grow in Florida, only two are considered low maintenance for this area. The most widely used grass is St. Augustine, the other is Bahiagrass. St. Augustine varieties, such as Floratam, make a good carpet-like lawn. Bahia is more open-growing but will also make an acceptable lawn. Both grasses come as sod, but only Bahiagrass can be planted from seed. St. Augustine varieties have to be plugged or sprigged.
