If the vehicle will not be replaced, the license plates should be removed and destroyed. If the vehicle will be replaced, you may transfer the license plates to the newly purchased vehicle, as long as both vehicles fall under the same plate category.

For duplicate registration cards, stickers or tags, use MV-44. Duplicate vehicle registration card is $4.50, with sticker, $7.50. Duplicate titles, use MV-38O. Fee is $22.50. This form must be notarized

Colorado license plates are registered to the owner and not the vehicle. You can dispose of the plates but you must cancel the plates with your County’s Department of Motor Vehicles so you will be released of any liability after the date of disposal. You can also return them to the DMV for a refund and/or their recycling program.
