Puppies are weaned from their mothers by about 6 weeks of age, but the period following weaning is very important in terms of learning "pack" behavior. Although 8 weeks is old enough and a common age for leaving the litter, 10 weeks is probably optimum for a GSD. However, better to take the puppy at 8 weeks if the rest of the litter have already gone to their homes.

At the time you take your puppy home it has successfully completed only one half of the critical 16 week period in its life. The remaining 8 weeks are extremely important for both you and the puppy in terms of training and socialization. Physically and psychologically, seven weeks is the very youngest age that a puppy should go to its new home. In collies, the properties of the head (meaning skull shape, eye placement, muzzle length and shape, etc.) are often not determined until 10 weeks of age or older.
