Different transmissions require different types of transmission fluid. The experts at AAMCO recommend that you change your fluid every 25,000 to 35,000 miles as a part of our regular suggested maintenance --Safeguard Service. This service also includes replacing the filter or cleaning the screen, replacing the pan gasket, performing a final leak-check, and performing a road test. Check the owner's manual! The proper procedure varies from make to make. For example, most, but not all, vehicles should be at operating temperature. I can offer some tips, however. Be sure to check both sides of the dipstick and repeat the process a few times to ensure accuracy. F) weather conditions transmission fluid can actually gel up in an external cooler and cease to flow, causing damage. Use of the radiator cooler actually helps warm the fluid under these conditions. Toyota ATF TYPE T-IV fluid as specified for the four-door LS400 sedan. It is sold in a 4-litre white can (Toyota part No. 08886-01705) and available from Lexus and Toyota dealers at a price not much higher than the ordinary Dexron fluid. In 2002 the packaging and part number was revised to a 4-litre black can and 08886-81015.

Check fluid level with the engine running (except Honda), the transmission in "Park" (except Chrysler products which should be in neutral with the emergency brake applied), and with the engine at operating temperature. Remove the dipstick and wipe clean. Fully insert the stick and remove. Check both sides of the stick to determine correct reading. Repeat the process. The reason you have to check both sides of the dipstick is that circulating fluid can have surface waves.

Changing your transmission fluid regularly will extend the life of your transmission. On most transmissions, there is also a filter that needs to be changed at the same time. Most transmission specialists suggest changing the filter and fluid every 30,000 miles, even if the fluid looks clean. What happens is over time, it breaks down and becomes dirty. The operating temperatures will rise and lubrication will decrease, leading to premature wear and transmission failure.

Like an automatic transmission, the fluid in your manual transmission needs to be changed regularly. Changing the fluid will extend its life by removing dirt and moisture and by maintaining lubrication and minimizing high speed foaming. When the fluid gets dirty, it can no longer lubricate as it was designed.

Some people may want to use something lighter, in which case, our ATF or Racing 41 would be good suggestions. Racers may even want to run the Racing 21 which is fine. Many new cars now use an ATF or engine oil.

Use ONLY what it says in your owner's manual to use. Many Chrysler transmissions are NOT compatible with standard fluid! ATF+4 is usually the best one to use with automatic transmissions before 2001, ATF+5 after. THIS IS AN IMPORTANT and very misunderstood issue.
