Your student can take the PSAT/NMSQT alternative testing option, which is the converted SAT 1 test score taken in substitution for the PSAT/NMSQT. They have up to eight months to retake this test several times.(after the October PSAT/NMSQT has been administered). This procedure includes calling or sending a letter to the National Merit Corporation (by March) stating that your child did not take the test and you want the extension/alternative testing time.

The SAT is offered seven times a year (October, November, December, January, March, May, June), and the PSAT/NMSQT is offered once a year.(Third Tuesday or Saturday in October.) If the student has not taken the PSAT/NMSQT yet, they still can. You can sign them up as a junior, as long as you show the appropriate graduation date that correlates with them being a junior. Colleges can only access the results of the PSAT with a student's permission. This permission is given when a student signs up to participate in the College Scholarship Service at the time of the test. Institutions use the information provided by this service to identify and initiate contact with a preliminary group of students who might be a good match for their schools.

While most students nationwide do not take the PSAT until junior year, at Thacher, sophomores are given the opportunity to take the test along with juniors. This is solely a practice test for sophomores and colleges will never have access to the results. However, exposure to these tests has proven helpful in improving the results of the junior PSAT and subsequent SAT's. ALL freshmen should take either the real PSAT or a practice PSAT that the school provides. For the real PSAT, students can register like other students.
