A pump circulates water from the reservoir on to a cooling pad, which in turn becomes very wet. A fan draws air from outside the unit through the moistened pad. As it passes through the pad the air is cooled by evaporation. The key to effective evaporative cooling is ensuring that each of the cooling pads are completely saturated at all times during operation and that the systems fan & motor are sized and designed to deliver the appropriate airflow for the home.

The ideal location for the air conditioner is typically a compromise. We try to find the out-or-the-way location that is close tot he furnace room and the electrical panel. the farther away the outdoor unit is from the furnace, the more it costs the homeowner in installation costs. Proximity to neighbours is also a factor - you don't want your unit impinging on your neighbour's property! The best location is also one that gets a lot of shade.

To provide effective cooling, evaporative air conditioners need to be able to create airflow through the home, exhausting hot air outside. To assist the cool fresh airflow through the home, open windows and outside doors that are furthest from the outlet vent. In the rooms that have vents you should provide an opening to outside that is approximately twice the opening area of the vent.

Residence hall rooms may not have any window-mounted air conditioners or evaporative coolers because of electrical, water and security concerns.

McCullough’s comfort consultant will measure your home and calculate the actual heating & cooling load on the home (calculation using Manual J v8 that incorporates information about window size & direction, walls, ceiling, floor, appliances, insulation, etc). This will determine the proper size of equipment and ductwork that is needed. This will be compared to your current equipment & ductwork and will be adjusted based on your lifestyle, etc.

Generally allow one day for replacing a heating and air conditioning system. Installing a brand new central heating and cooling system, including ductwork , may take two days. Be aware that reputable contractors will refuse to install a new air conditioning system or heat pump system when it is raining. This is due to the fact that when moisture gets inside refrigerant lines it can be very damaging and can cause reliability and maintenance issues. [ back to top ]

Really the only maintenance it needs is to keep the filter behind the return air grill is cleaned once a month. Also check the seawater strainer at least daily when the system is in use.
