Water is generally safe in urban areas and established hotels/resorts, but for first-time African travelers this may cause abdominal upsets. So it is best to drink sealed bottled water, which is available throughout Kenya and Tanzania ? hotels, lodges and camps. This same sealed bottled or purified water is what is used by hotels, lodges and camps to make ice cubes, so they are safe; but if you are not comfortable doing so, avoid the ice cubes.

Flakes are caused by calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate precipitates. When hard water is frozen or boiled, the carbonates in the water come out of solution, appearing as whitish flakes and attaching to containers. This calcium is the same as that in dairy products and is harmless. Soft water does not have any calcium or magnesium carbonate deposits, but the use of soft water is not recommended.

A10. The most helpful answer is "more than they do now". Surprisingly, while we know a great deal about the requirements of the other main nutrients (fats, proteins etc.), the government does very little to promote our primary nutrient. Most professionals agree that around 8 decent-sized glasses a day is about right. That's around 2 litres. What we do know is that most people, especially older people, drink nowhere near that amount, and mild dehydration is very common.

All restaurants and almost all the little roadside stands serve bottled water and clean factory-made ice cubes. Vegetables are washed in tap water, but are safe when cooked. You may want to avoid eating raw ones.

Using ice cubes is not the best way to cool water, since it can alter water's taste and composition. Mineral water should be cooled in a 'glacette' or ice bucket.

Water taken from lakes, rivers, streams and ponds may look clean and have no undesirable odor or taste. Unfortunately, however, pathogens found in water not only are harmful, but also are invisible to the naked eye and may be odorless and tasteless. These bacteria, viruses and protozoa can cause mild nausea and fever or can develop into more serious illnesses, such as severe diarrhea, hepatitis or typhoid fever.

Not even the locals drink the tap water...and all of the ice on the island in restaurants, hotels, etc. is purified. Any water/ice that you are served anywhere on the island will be purified, so not to worry. As I said, not even the locals drink it, so why would they give it to a tourist? No one wants you getting sick on vacation. Some of the larger and nicer hotels/resorts do have water filtration/purification systems.

Verify that the water is safe. We recommend that you only drink bottled drinking water, which can be purchased, in most cases, in the campaign country.

Commercially made ice is stirred as it is being frozen and household ice is not. Without mixing, many more ice crystals form and air is trapped in the ice. Light rays are distorted by these crystals and this distortion gives home frozen ice a cloudy appearance. Dissolved minerals (calcium and magnesium) in the water also tend to settle out when the water freezes. You may notice these minerals floating in your glass when you use the ice cubes. Back to top

I have heard all kinds of controversy about distilled water - most everyone I know who is against it also happens to sell some other type of water filtration device, oddly enough. Proper hydration is very important, especially in Houston. Traditionally no water is drunk during Ashtanga practice. Come well hydrated and also drink plenty afterwards. In my experience as a teacher water is mainly a way to get a break from the practice. If there are special needs please discuss it with your teacher but avoid putting a water bottle next to your mat and pausing every six breaths to drink.
