How do I get MDS?

The Hosted BES FAQ - Cheap BES/MDS - Wireless Outlook sync! ...
If you're a big enough corporation, it's not a problem. You just need to buy a Blackberry Enterprise Server (BES). However, they are generally too expensive for sole individuals because they start at $995 for a 5-user license. Some discounts can be found through a reseller, but this still burns a huge hole in an individual's pocket. Not to mention, you will need a dedicated Internet connection at your home to run BES at home.

How can I connect via BES?

Ask your BES admin to provide access on port 3389 (default Microsoft RDP port) to your Terminal Server thru BES. First of all we recommend you to enable TCP/IP on your Blackberry. You can see list of known settings here or ask your wireless carrier. After configuring full Internet access on your Blackberry, go to Setup / Connection type and select "Direct TCP" and "TCP/IP". Do MDs skip during playback? Why not?

Minidisc Frequently Asked Questions
Rarely. A read-ahead buffer stores a few seconds of the audio material in memory during playback. The ATRAC decoder takes the data from the buffer, rather than directly from the medium. Thus, if the mechanism mistracks because of shock or vibration, the data continues to flow from memory while the MD machine recovers. If no more data remains available (when the disturbance lasts a long time), the audio material gets interrupted. See similar questions...

Will MDs of the future contain un-compressed data?

Minidisc Frequently Asked Questions
Sony produces high density Minidiscs and drives with a capacity of about 650MB for their MD Camcoder. Such capacity would allow a CD's worth of data to be stored uncompressed on an MD. However, new audio MDs made with such capacity would be incompatible with the existing hardware base (see below), and (assuming 16 bit linear recording), would not increase audio fidelity substantially. Why Is MDS Required?

The Hosted BES FAQ - Cheap BES/MDS - Wireless Outlook sync! ...
MDS means Mobile Data Services, which is explained on this web page at Research In Motion. MDS is a feature of BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES). The simplest english to the layman is that MDS essentially makes full Internet access possible on your Blackberry. Without access to MDS, it is almost as if you are behind "The Great Firewall" that blocks all ports except for email and WAP, limiting your ability to use your Blackberry. See similar questions...

What is the status of Sony's push to have MDs replace CD-ROMs?

Minidisc Frequently Asked Questions
Sony wanted MD-Data to replace 3.5" floppy-disks (1.4 Mb, 2.8 Mb and 21 Mb floptical), not CD-ROM (a well implanted medium in the computer industry by now, and currently cheap). MD-Data's first incarnation was the MDH-10 SCSI drive, it provided 140 MB of data storage on an MD but was slow, expensive and incompatible with the Audio MD format (Data drives cannot read or write audio MD data except in "play" mode, which does not provide computer access to the data.). Is MDS/MDG Specific To Blackberries?

The Hosted BES FAQ - Cheap BES/MDS - Wireless Outlook sync! ...
Not quite. All modern cellphones with access to the Internet, require a gateway of some kind. You may have heard of these in different naming conventions such as GGSN, APN, MDG, etc. In simple terms, they essentially make connections possible between a carrier network and an external network, such as the Internet on your mobile device (or even just a simple connection to a BES server). If you have heard of GGSN (APN) on a cellphone, then that's a network component similiar to MDG. See similar questions...

Is the MdS a well organised event?

Marathon des Sables Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, once the event has actually started. But the day before the race starts and the day after the end of the actual race, things can be a bit chaotic. Catering for and accommodating 800 participants plus a crew and press of 200 is not easy in the desert, so don't expect a high level of efficiency and there is a lot of waiting around.
