The biomedical science research technologist is a member of a multidisciplinary team of researchers involved in the discovery, development, and production of chemicals, diagnostic products, and biopharmaceuticals. The biomedical science research technologist uses skills in molecular and cellular biology, immunology, protein chemistry, and microbial fermentation to produce reagents and products used in industry, medicine, and basic and applied research.

The biomedical science research technologist is primarily employed in private biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries and university or government based research laboratories. They may also seek employment in management and education.

Biomedical Science covers a wide range of subjects from molecules to microbes to medicine, from body systems to biotechnology, and from human genome to health issues. In the post-genomics age, these relevant branches of sciences are converging to deliver the promises held out by biotechnology. The mastery of the Biomedical Sciences is associated with a passion for science, and the desire to contribute towards understanding fundamental processes through a relentless process of questioning.

The primary argument for proceeding with cloning-for-biomedical-research is that it might lead to advances in medical knowledge and toward treatments and cures. Those members of the Council who support cloning-for-biomedical-research believe that it may offer uniquely useful ways of investigating and possibly treating many chronic debilitating diseases and disabilities, providing aid and relief to millions who are suffering, and to their families and communities.

Biotechnology is a vast discipline where integrated technology derived from modern biology is applied to the areas from consumer products, the environment to medicine. Biomedical Science is centered upon the specific application of biology in medicine to the areas of diagnostics and therapeutics.

A doctor's career usually involves further training beyond the degrees of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, often in an area of special interest. For graduates who wish to become specialists, training is available within the major teaching hospitals for those who gain registrar positions.

HHMI values creativity. We encourage our scientists to extend the boundaries of knowledge by providing them with the resources, time, and freedom to pursue challenging questions and make fundamental discoveries. Our scientists are free to explore and, if necessary, to change direction in their research. Moreover, they have support to follow their ideas through to fruition—even if that process takes a very long time.

Some scientists believe that stem cells derived from cloned human embryos, produced explicitly for such research, might prove uniquely useful for studying many genetic diseases and devising novel therapies. (See Chapters 4 and 6 of the report.)

No one knows. In fact, it is not known if cloning-for-biomedical-research will help treat diseases at all, but some researchers believe they have sound reasons for expecting valuable knowledge from such research. Other avenues of research on diseases are also being pursued, including adult stem cell research and various alternative techniques for dealing with immune rejection.

The cut off point varies from year to year depending on the calibre of students who apply for the course and the number of vacancies available. For AY06/07, the cut off point for Diploma in Biomedical Science is 20.

In evolutionary terms, monkeys are very close to humans. As a consequence of this, non-human primates are often the only sort of animal that can be infected with the same viruses and parasites that cause human disease. In addition, new drugs, vaccines and other therapies are becoming very specific, with the consequence that they only work in primates.

Among its responsibilities the Faculty of Science office approves admission to all research postgraduate courses within the faculty, handles variations to candidature for masters students, and holds a number of seminars and workshops for research postgraduates.

A technologist is a person specially trained to operate the diagnostic imaging equipment and to position patients to achieve the clearest images possible. While technologists are not medical doctors they do work closely with the radiologist reviewing patient histories, presenting histories and preliminary films to the radiologist and making sure all patients are as comfortable as possible.

Social Science Research Network (SSRN) is a world wide collaborative of over 800 leading scholars that is devoted to the rapid worldwide dissemination of social science research. It is composed of a number of specialized research networks in each of the social sciences. Each of SSRN's networks encourages the early distribution of research results by reviewing and distributing submitted abstracts and by soliciting abstracts of top quality research papers around the world.

The Undergraduate Research Apprentice Program (URAP) creates opportunities for Berkeley undergraduates of any major to work with faculty in a variety of disciplines that range anywhere from Anthropology to Social Welfare or Women's Studies.
