Letters of recommendation should be 14 type point or above but we also know that you don’t have control over the typeface of these letters since other people are writing them for you. (Extra credit is given for large type on letters.) It is important that we see the original letter on letterhead even if it is in small print. If you choose to re-type it for us, be sure to include the original signed letter on letterhead with it. We do not require you to re-type it, however.

You should select references who are able to explain why you would be a good addition to a research group. Anyone who could comment on your skills in the laboratory, creativity, problem solving abilities, motivation, ability to handle complex scientific literature and concepts, etc. would be a good choice. You will have the option to select the font size and type that you want on most of our printed ribbons. On our 3/8" width ribbons and our garbo ribbon, the default option is a 14 point italic font, but if you want a larger font, you can select the18 point font. The closer you can approximate the look of a typewritten letter, the more closely people read the letter. Even in the era of desktop publishing, this has been proven again and again. Never "justify" (line up evenly) the right-hand margin, which takes away enormously from its impact as a letter. for size, be kind to over-fifty folks who can't manage smaller print any more.
