Cut up your cards, but I do not recommend you close the card accounts. The reason is that your credit score (FICO score) will actually be affected by your debt to credit line ratio. For example: If you have $1,000 in credit card debt and you have three credit cards with a total credit limit of $6,000 your debt to credit ratio is 30%. The alternative would be if you have $1,000 in debt and only $1,500 in credit limit because you have closed the other two accounts.

You can do this in several ways: Entering the amount and name of the thing you buy in your credit card register when you buy it. It really is easier to categorize this way.
