How are used catalytic converters recycled?

AECC - Association for Emissions Control by Catalyst
Modern car dismantlers, scrap yards and workshops remove used catalytic converters from end-of-life vehicles. Specialist companies collect them and accumulate bigger lots at central warehouses. The converters are decanned; i.e. the ceramic or metallic catalyst is removed from the steel can by special cutting devices. The steel is sorted by quality and sold as secondary scrap to steel plants.

Are there enough precious metals for catalytic converters?

AECC - Association for Emissions Control by Catalyst
The precious metals, including platinum, have been recycled since long before this became a necessity to conserve our resources. From the onset of their use in cars catalytic converters have been removed from end-of-life vehicles and the platinum recovered. In the USA, which has had catalytic converters for over 25 years, it is estimated that in 1999 60% of the platinum needed for new vehicles was accounted for by recovered platinum from spent catalytic converters. What is the difference between catalytic converters and secondary combustion?

Frequently Asked Questions - Top-Quality Insulation & Fi...
A catalytic converter is a device through which wood smoke is channeled. It lowers the combustion temperature of the gases, allowing them to be consumed at lower firing. Secondary combustion mixes air with the exhaust gases, causing them to re-ignite and burn before going up the chimney. See similar questions...

Do you have any information regarding Catalytic Converters for California customers?

BMA Auto Parts | Bumper to Bumper since 1978 | Oem auto part...
The California Air Resource Board (C.A.R.B.) has not made it legal for Catalytic Converters to be replaced with any "aftermarket" Catalytic Converters on 1996 and later cars with OBD II. Please check with the EPA regarding local laws on "aftermarket" Catalytic Converters. If you fall into this category we will not be able ship to you. We do have an option for CA residents that fall into this above category. See similar questions...

Question - Do modern catalytic converters perform on short journeys?

ECMA - Frequently Asked Questions
Answer - Yes. Although modern catalytic converters need a moderately hot exhaust to start working with the available technology this happens within a short span of 30 seconds of the start of the engine. Thus it is a myth that catalytic converters do not work on short journeys. Answer - The lead replacement additives as well as petrol have totally different chemistries, which would react negatively with the catalyst-equipped vehicle. See similar questions...

Question - Are catalytic converters fragile? Do they need frequent replacement?

ECMA - Frequently Asked Questions
Answer - The modern catalytic converter is one of the most reliable elements in the engine management system. It is very robust since it is normally placed in a metal housing and has a lifespan of over 100,000 Kms. Answer - Catalytic converters obtained thru authorized vehicle dealers are the most authentic way to ensure that the replaced converter is functioning as effectively as the original. Are catalytic converters fragile? Do they need replacing frequently?

AECC - Association for Emissions Control by Catalyst
The modern catalytic converter is robust and one of the most reliable elements in the engine management system. Durability of at least 80 000 km is required for car certification. Roadside tests by UK Vehicle Inspectorate show a failure rate, requiring a prohibition order, of 0.11% for catalyst cars versus 4.36% for non-catalyst cars. A converter supplied from a franchised dealer for the car is the most reliable way to ensure this. See similar questions...

Catalytic converters produce CO2. Is this adding to the greenhouse effect?

AECC - Association for Emissions Control by Catalyst
All the carbon contained in fossil fuels is ultimately converted to CO2 in the atmosphere. By accelerating that conversion, and removing other dangerous pollutants in the process, catalytic converters do not increase overall CO2 levels. The only way to do that is to burn less fuel. The latest catalyst technology with ultra low sulphur fuels produce lower emissions of greenhouse gases such as methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) than are emitted from an untreated engine. Are sample rate converters used?

Aviom Frequently Asked Questions
No, that's where Pro64's variable sample rates come in. With a range of about ?10% from the nominal rate, the Pro64 network can sync to virtually any clock it's presented with. That's important because sample rate converters actually change the audio data to make the samples align between two devices whose clocks are slightly different (even if their nominal rates are the same). Once the audio data has been changed by a sample rate converter, it can't be changed back. See similar questions...

What types of lens converters can be used?

Konica Minolta FAx (Forum & Ax FAQ)
Pretty much any type that can be mounted with an adaptor. Despite the feeling, the GT lens is robust enough for most of the converters out there. The 2 new converters Minolta just released (ACW-100 and ACT-100) are both quite heavy with the teleconverter topping at approximately 500g, the same weight as the camera. The 2 converters are shipping and they are distributed with an updated firmware which permit to specify whether no converter, the tele or the wide converter are used. See similar questions...

Why is recycled water being used?

Melbourne Water : Water Recycling : Links and FAQS : Links a...
Water is a precious resource, yet less than 10% of Australia's urban and industrial water is recycled. Melburnians use about 485,000 million litres of potable (drinking) water each year. Much of this is for uses that do not require drinking quality water, and could be substituted with recycled water. Water recycling is a socially, environmentally and economically viable solution to help preserve our drinking water supplies. See similar questions...

What recycled materials are used in cement production?

Sustainability FAQs | PCA Press Center
While maintaining superior quality, the use of raw materials has been significantly reduced by replacing them with recycled industrial byproducts. The industry has also reduced its own waste by recycling more than 75 percent of cement kiln dust (CKD) – nearly eight million tons each year – directly back into the cement kiln as raw material. By doing so, manufacturers conserve energy and reduce use of limestone and other virgin raw materials. See similar questions...
